My Favorite Books of 2022 (So Far)

My Favorite Books of 2022 (So Far)

I’ve blitzed through nearly 30 books this year. My goal is to read 40 because…. drumroll… I turned 40 this month.

I do a mix of book-books (you know, the ones made of paper), Kindle books (bought or borrowed from the library), and audiobooks. AUDIOBOOKS COUNT AS READING! There, I said it.

Have ADHD? Were you diagnosed as an adult? Welcome to the club.

Divergent Mind helped me understand myself. A lot. I was diagnoses with ADHD at 39— after graduating high school with a 3.9 GPA, getting into a top-rated university (go Badgers) and generally doing pretty okay at most jobs. But man, was it a struggle! Divergent Mind does a deep dive into women with sensory processing issues— like ADHD, autism, HSP, and Synesthesia. This book made me understand myself more in 5 days than I have in 40 years. If you have or think you may have any of these tendencies, a must-read.

Look, we should all be lucky enough to have a guncle.

After a young mother dies of cancer (and her husband goes to rehab for his pill addiction), the kiddos get sent to Gay Uncle Patrick’s house in Palm Springs for the summer. GUP is a tv star who goes the way of Garbo— out of the spotlight— after his hugely successful sitcom ends. Think Joey from Friends, but gay. Patrick is my most favorite book character in recent history— funny, endless mental filing cabinet of pop culture knowledge, and also introspective and so great with his niece and nephew. IMHO every kid should be fortunate enough to have a GUP, or in my case, a GUBrian.

by Colleen Hoover. Verity is one of the character’s names. So don’t worry, it’s not a word you’re supposed to know.

Damn Colleen: I’m impressed by your sick and twisted mind! Read this book in 4 days. A thriller with sex, sex, and more sex. Trigger warning: some child abuse stuff, but it all makes sense in the end.

Or does it?

AKA the queen of the summer beach read.

Loved it. It’s fiction, but inspired by Fleetwood Mac— a kind of behind the music-style deep-dive into the forming and implosion of fictional band Daisy Jones and the Six. I listened to this book because they hired an ensemble cast to read it— Jennifer beals, Benjamin Bratt, and Julia Whalen, who reads many of my fav audiobooks. Two thumbs up.

This book is not for everyone.

But it sooooo was for me! This might be the most seen I’ve ever felt by a novel. The most accurate depiction of motherhood, especially of small children. If you’re a mom, and felt blindsided as to how hard it is, how complicated, how much you give up AND also cannot believe how strong and fierce women are, read this book. Rachel: you are amazing. And: best cover ever?

What have you been reading? Have you read any of these books? Let’s talk about it in the comments!
